Balloon Sinuplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that can treat chronic sinusitis or chronic sinus symptoms such as facial pain and pressure, nasal drainage or frequent sinus infections.
During the procedure, the nose is decongested and numbing medicine is placed. Using a small telescope and camera, the balloon device is placed into the opening of the sinus being treated then inflated to widen the opening of the sinus. This allows a release of sinus pressure and can allow the sinus to drain more effectively. Although balloon sinuplasty often cannot achieve the same level of results that sinus surgery can, the minimally invasive nature of it and ease of recovery make it an excellent choice for the right patient. Balloon sinuplasty can be performed in the office or in an operating room. Sedation or general anesthesia may be used to make sure you are comfortable throughout the procedure. Patients can go home right after the balloon sinuplasty procedure. Some patients may have some discomfort or headache afterwards which can be treated with oral pain medications. It is common to have some drainage of mucus or blood after the procedure for a few days. Patients are usually instructed to use nasal saline rinses or sprays after surgery to help clear the blood and mucus from the nose.
